Robinson Secondary School PTSA

Supporting Parents, Teachers and Students

November 2008
President’s Message
,

The first quarter of the 2008-2009 has now officially ended. In the first two months of school year, PTSA sponsored assemblies; worked on Back-to-School Nights; provided the volunteers for HS and MS picture days and health screenings; beautified the entrances at Robinson; held a volunteer orientation meeting; compiled, produced and sold the MS and HS directories; compiled the Safe Home Pledge Forms and MS Internet Safety Forms; hosted the regional Virginia PTA, Enough Is Enough and Verizon Foundation Internet 101 Safety Town Meeting;  participated in Taste of Robinson; organized and delivered the PTSA’s Annual Candidate’s Forum; worked with our government teachers to hold a Student/Parent Mock Election; produced two RamGram newsletters and rolled out a new Robinson PTSA website at www.robinsonptsa.org in addition to providing many hours working on our book sale and helping Robinson in and out of the classroom. PTSA has been very busy at Robinson this fall.

The month of November will continue to be busy month. First, parents are encouraged to attend Robinson’s Touching Bases on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 from 7:20 AM – 10:20 AM. This is a great opportunity to meet with some or all of your child’s teachers and receive their verbal feedback on the performance of your son or daughter in their classroom. On that day you will find that high school teachers are usually positioned in the field house and middle school teachers are usually located in the cafeteria and the main hallway.  For those of you that are new to Robinson, there are no appointments necessary for this day.  It is on a first-come basis. A mini-conference with a teacher usually lasts for 3-5 minutes; however, it is an excellent opportunity to hear first hand from the teacher about the successes or challenges your child has with a particular class or curriculum.  Also, if you have not purchased your copy of the school directory, remaining copies will be available for purchase at the PTSA table during Touching Bases. Remember, the 11th will be a Gold day and your child should be at their bus four hours later than usual.  The first class they will be attending  2nd period will begin at 11:20AM; no lunch will be served that day.

Second, donations for the PTSA Annual Used Book Sale will be continuing until November 13th.  The Used Book Sale will be three days: November 14, 15 and 16th .  November 14th will be for students only; a limited number of books will be sold on the stage during lunches. On Saturday, November 15 from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM and Sunday, November 16 from 10 AM to 4:00 PM, the sale will be open to the public. Thousands of books (hardbacks and softbacks), CDs, DVDs, videos and computer software will be for sale. Books include bestsellers (fiction and nonfiction), classic literature, children books, youth books, cookbooks, coffee table books, reference books, books in various foreign languages books, and books on politics, religion, gardening, household improvements, art, education, crafts, exercise and fitness, textbooks, science, history and geography, philosophy and psychology and others. Workers will be needed for sorting books on the afternoon of the 14th and also to staff the sale on the 15th and 16th. If you are able to volunteer, please email me at tmatlaga@yahoo.com.

Currently, the PTSA is developing a number of projects/programs from a working legislative forum with our local supervisors, school board and state legislators to developing parent aids to tackle the issues on Internet Safety and Health and Wellness.  As more details become available on these projects, the PTSA will post them on our website. Also, please participate in our monthly issue poll found on the front page of our website.

Have a good month and remember the next PTSA meeting is on Monday, November 17, 2008 at 7 PM.  See you there.
